Was worried after reading all the reviews about the office not answering calls, but I left a voicemail and immediately got a return call the next business day, and they were very respectful and helpful. Just fyi

They don’t answer the phone which is annoying, but if you go in person they are helpful and efficient. Was dreading my visit the day before the vehicle tax due date and it only took 10 minutes to resolve the problem. Make sure you go in person.

It is ridiculous trying to reach anyone in this office. I have legit called every day this week at least 5x a day. No one answers the phone I emailed Alex Pullen the city assessor to no response. I don't live in New Haven anymore. I'm trying to get my motor vehicle taxes transferred but you can't get in touch with anyone. This is incredibly unreal what the heck are they doing down their besides not answering the phone and emails.

The vehicle registration is a borderline scam. If you register in June, you pay for the entire year and the registration lasts you <1 month. There is no pro-rating or ability to appeal. No wonder so many people in New Haven avoid registering their cars here (effectively dodging taxes and losing the city money).. what a joke. PS they don't answer their phones or return voicemails.

It has been a struggle trying to contact anyone in the office. I tried the tax office and got disconnected after the rep tried to "transfer" me to the assessor office. I even emailed Alex Pullen the city assessor to no avail. I don't live in New Haven anymore so I can't just go into the office. I'm trying settle an issue with my Motor Vehicle Tax Bill but can't get in touch with anyone. This is incredibly frustrating because they have the nerve penalize you with interest for every late month for late payments but no one to help with inquiries.

I called in to send in paperwork. they told me I could email it to them. I gave it a few hours and still they never got it. Their email security is wacky. Better going in person than emailing them paper work. I called again and put on hold for while. Was told the person in charge would be back @ 4:30 PM . He never came back . They said call tomorrow . If i were you just go in person don't listen to them.

Terrible experience. The tax office had a glitch in their online tax payment system that failed to recognize a checking account number that was copied and pasted in, then counted it as a returned check, charged me $30 and forced me to get a certified check from my bank. And when I complained she just said "we don't waive fees or interest" and that was that. Great. So a problem with your system makes me pay $33.87 extra and then will tow my car if I refuse to pay for your error.

Don't use their online system.

And to think I was one of the few students who actually registered their cars. I wish I hadn't. I'm still paying taxes on a car I sold 7 months ago, they decided to charge me for 3/4 of the year. Again, no recourse.
