To potential home buyers at Azure:

I hope that your search for a new home is going well. My family and I are currently looking for a home in the Paradise Valley Area and were very excited to have come across Azure, but our experience with Shea Signature thus far has fully dissuaded us from building a home with them. I hope that our negative experience will guide you and your family with any future decision making at Shea Signature.

There are several things that we have learned over this experience that I believe are worthwhile to share:
1) Shea “Signature” appears to be a relatively new branch of Shea Homes (trademarked in 2017) that claims to be a “custom-home” and “high-end” brand. Nationally, I am unable to find another community built by Shea Signature. If one looks at Shea Homes in Arizona, they will find various other properties priced from 200-500k, well below the 1.9M starting price point at Azure. The Shea Signature trademark appears to be Shea Homes’ first attempt delving into the luxury market.
2) Per the Better Business Bureau, while Shea Homes has been in business for 72 years, they remain not accredited and currently maintain a C- rating.
3) They claim to be a custom home builder, but we’ve found this to be far from the truth. Our family was interested adding a walk-in-closet to the two non-master bedrooms. To be honest, we were surprised at a two million dollar price point this was not standard. Nevertheless, when we asked for this small modification, after several weeks Azure was unable to provide us with an updated floor plan. That said, they were rather quick to tell us that this would be an additional 25k. To date, we still have not received any response from the architects.
4) Currently, there appears to be a divide in the community between single level homes and those with a lower level. Per the sales team, the single level residence 2 home is the most popular. I suspect that this stems from fact that the floorplan has the best sqft/dollar ratio considering that a 1000sqft lower level adds 400k to the cost of the home. At Azure, specific residences can only be built on specific homesites (e.g. Residence 1 w/ lower lever on homesite 54). When we first came across the community, the sales team initially agreed to allow us to build a different floor plan than their site plan required. With that said, they arbitrarily increased our lot price from 75k to 125k. Note, that Shea Signaure is no longer allowing this as an option. Currently, while we were awaiting updated specs from our walk-in-closet, Shea Signature elected to increase not only the home price 75k, but also increase the homesite from its original 75k (+50k to build our single level) an additional 50k, now totaling 175k. While we have our original pricing in writing, Shea Homes will not honor their agreement. My inclination is that the rationale for this move is to narrow the gap between the single- and lower-level pricing to sway customers to spend more.
5) Finally and perhaps most importantly, is the overwhelmingly poor level of customer service and communication that has been continually demonstrated by the sales team. Our phone calls remain unanswered and our emails without replies. Shea Signature is marketing to a luxury crowd with a history of sub-standard service, no experience in custom-home building or high-end real estate altogether for that matter.

We’ve spent the last couple months working with Shea Signature with the hope to build our dream home. What we’re left with is a multitude of unanswered emails and phone calls in addition to an exorbitant amount of time misspent. My hope is that prospective homebuyers can learn from our experience and make a decision that is best for them and their family.
